Simon Hart – 2014 Parliamentary Question to the Deputy Prime Minister

The below Parliamentary question was asked by Simon Hart on 2014-06-11.

To ask the Deputy Prime Minister, what checks are in place to ensure that multiple property owners do not vote twice in European or general elections on the same date as local or council elections; how many people have been charged with attempting to vote twice in the last three such elections; and how many fines have been issued as a result of those charges.

    Greg Clark

It is illegal for an individual who is registered in more than one local authority area to vote more than once at a European Parliamentary or general election; however electors are not prevented from voting in local government elections in those areas.

The presiding officer at a polling station may ask any elector if they have already voted at an election, and may withhold a ballot paper from an elector if they do not answer the question satisfactorily. The electoral register is marked to record the issuing of ballot papers to individuals at polling stations, and similarly a list is maintained of returned postal votes. These records can assist with an investigation should any voting irregularities be suspected.

The Government does not collect or hold data on electoral fraud.

After the last few weeks the very least we can do for the country is get the right Prime Minister this time. No time for experiments; no time for frivolity; no time to line up a job offer. This means choosing someone serious, tested, competent and kind.

  • Simon Hart – 2021 Comments on Budget Impact on Wales

Simon Hart – 2021 Comments on Budget Impact on Wales

The comments made by Simon Hart, the Secretary of State for Wales, on 29 October 2021.

This is a fantastic budget for Wales, delivering significant investment directly to people, businesses and communities across the country.

The devolved administration in Wales will receive its largest-ever settlement so it can deliver its vital services like health, education and flood protection, while Wales will benefit fully from many of our UK-wide measures including freezes to fuel and alcohol duty, the increase in the minimum wage for thousands of workers and investment in parks and sports facilities.

Levelling up communities across the UK is top of our agenda. Investing more than £120m in 10 projects including the regeneration of Aberystwyth seafront and improving transport links in Rhondda shows how we will achieve this ambition across Wales.

Alongside the funding of a Welsh Veterans’ Commissioner, these measures and others in the Spending Review add up to an excellent package for Wales and its economy.

  • Simon Hart – 2021 Comments on the Bishop of St Davids

Simon Hart – 2021 Comments on the Bishop of St Davids

The comments made by Simon Hart, the Secretary of State for Wales, on 18 June 2021.

I am incredibly grateful to the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of Bangor for taking the trouble to respond to concerns raised about the Bishop of St Davids’ unacceptable Twitter activity.

Their comments should reassure the public – whether they are churchgoers or not – that the Church takes these concerns seriously and that there are no circumstances in which they can be justified.

We hope, and expect, that the Church will continue to engage with politicians, to challenge us and to hold us to account, but to do so in a way that avoids legitimate views being demeaned.
