Priti Patel – 2021 Comments on Illegal Migration

The comments made by Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, on 20 July 2021.

The British people have simply had enough of illegal migration and the exploitation of migrants by criminal gangs.

Illegal immigration is driven by serious organised criminals and people smugglers. The public are rightly angry that small boats are arriving on our shores, facilitated by appalling criminal gangs who profit from human misery and put lives at risk.

The government is addressing the challenge of illegal migration for the first time in over two decades through comprehensive reform of our asylum system which will enable us to going after the gangs exploiting people, deter illegal entry into the UK, introduce new and tougher criminal offences for those attempting to enter the UK illegally and strengthen our ability to remove those with no legal right to be in the UK.

  • Priti Patel – 2021 Statement on the National Crime Agency

Priti Patel – 2021 Statement on the National Crime Agency

The statement made by Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, in the House of Commons on 13 July 2021.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) leads the fight against serious and organised crime. It has the power to task other law enforcement partners and a capability, with local to international reach, to disrupt the impact of serious and organised crime on the UK.

This is the eighth Her Majesty’s inspectorate of constabulary and fire and rescue services inspection of the NCA and examines the non-specialist NCA investigation teams based at the branch offices across the UK. The focus is specifically on the alignment of investigations to the threats, allocation of resources, and the NCA’s capacity to tackle organised crime.

I have asked HMICFRS to publish the report. It will be published today and will be available online at http://www.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/. I will arrange for a copy to be placed in the Libraries of both Houses.

The inspection found that NCA’s crime reduction function is working well in a number of areas of law enforcement. The agency’s management of the highest priority cases and the difficult management of scarce, specialist resources are effective, and cases being developed by the intelligence command are focused on SOC threats. The agency’s investigators show resilience and flexibility often in difficult conditions. However, the report also identifies a number of areas for improvement, including assessment of capacity in the investigations command to meet the demand being developed by the intelligence command, inadequate level and quality of equipment and access to investigative tools in some parts of the country, an over-reliance on legacy IT systems and the need for consistent investment to ensure the NCA is at the same standards as the police force.

  • Priti Patel – 2021 Comments on Knife and Firearms Ban

Priti Patel – 2021 Comments on Knife and Firearms Ban

The comments made by Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, on 14 July 2021.

There is no place in our society for violent crime and harm caused by such knives and firearms. Lives have been lost through serious violence, and this ban will help save lives by getting more knives and other weapons off the streets and out of the hands of violent criminals.

The human suffering and hurt caused by the tragic loss of life through violent crime is unacceptable, which is why the government will stop at nothing to give the police the powers needed to stop violent crime and protect the public.

From today, anyone possessing one of these deadly weapons unlawfully will face the full force of the law.

Priti Patel – 2021 Statement on the Nationality and Borders Bill

The statement made by Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, in the House of Commons on 6 July 2021.

In March I published the new plan for immigration (NPI), setting out the overwhelming case for change to fix the broken asylum system, and deliver a system that is fair but firm. The Nationality and Borders Bill, introduced today, will deliver the most comprehensive reform of the asylum system in decades. The principle behind the Bill is simple: access to the United Kingdom’s asylum system should be based on need, not on the ability to pay people smugglers.

The Bill—and the wider NPI—has three key objectives:

Make the system fairer and more effective so that we can better protect and support those in genuine need of asylum.

Deter illegal entry into the UK breaking the business model of criminal trafficking networks and saving lives.

Removing from the UK those with no right to be here.

The introduction of the Bill was preceded by a consultation on the NPI which the Government will provide a response to in due course.

To support the parliamentary scrutiny of the Bill, we are publishing a gov.uk page. This can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/the-nationality-and-borders-bill.

  • Priti Patel – 2021 Comments on Removals Agreement with Albania

Priti Patel – 2021 Comments on Removals Agreement with Albania

The comments made by Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, on 9 July 2021.

I am determined to fix our immigration system, clamp down on illegal entry, and remove those with no right to be in UK as swiftly as possible.

Our New Plan for Immigration, coupled with this new agreement, will speed up the removal of Albanian nationals who have committed crimes in the UK and overstayed their welcome.

I make no apology for removing dangerous foreign criminals to protect the British people and, so far this year, more than 1,000 foreign criminals have been deported, with more being removed every single week.

Priti Patel – 2021 Comments on Anniversary of Reading Attacks

The comments made by Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, on 20 June 2021.

A year on from the cowardly attack in Reading’s Forbury Gardens, my thoughts and prayers on this very difficult day are with the families and loved ones of Joe Ritchie-Bennett, James Furlong and David Wails, those that were injured and affected & the truly brave police officers.

Priti Patel – 2021 Comments on Windrush Compensation

The comments made by Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, on 1 June 2021.

I am absolutely committed to putting right the terrible injustices faced by the Windrush generation under successive governments.

I have been clear that I will listen to victims and act, which is why I overhauled the Compensation Scheme in December, and we are now seeing the positive impact of those changes on people’s lives with nearly £30 million paid or offered.

I will continue to work tirelessly to make sure that more money continues to be paid more quickly.

Priti Patel – 2021 Comments on Bringing Afghan Interpreters to UK

The comments made by Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, on 1 June 2021.

I’m proud to say that the UK is fulfilling its promise to those Afghan interpreters and other locally employed staff who have worked tirelessly alongside our Armed Forces.

It is our moral obligation to recognise the risks they have faced in the fight against terrorism and reward their efforts. I’m pleased that we are meeting this fully, by providing them and their families the opportunity to build a new life in this country.

Priti Patel – 2021 Comments on the Draft Online Safety Bill

The comments made by Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, on 12 May 2021.

This new legislation will force tech companies to report online child abuse on their platforms, giving our law enforcement agencies the evidence they need to bring these offenders to justice.

Ruthless criminals who defraud millions of people and sick individuals who exploit the most vulnerable in our society cannot be allowed to operate unimpeded, and we are unapologetic in going after them.

It’s time for tech companies to be held to account and to protect the British people from harm. If they fail to do so, they will face penalties.

Priti Patel – 2021 Comments on the Pet Theft Taskforce

The comments made by Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, on 8 May 2021.

Having callous thieves steal a much-loved pet is heart-breaking for families and it is deplorable that criminals seek to profit from this cruel crime. We are already taking action to combat such lawlessness by bolstering the police with 20,000 extra officers but this new taskforce will ensure we know how best to combat the driving forces behind this distressing crime and clamp down on the perpetrators.
