Chris Stephens – 2015 Parliamentary Question to the Cabinet Office

The below Parliamentary question was asked by Chris Stephens on 2015-10-09.

To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office, pursuant to the contribution by the hon. Member for Croydon South on 14 September 2015, Official Report, column 787, what assessment has been made of the income received by public sector employers from the deduction of trades union dues at source.

    Matthew Hancock

The cost of administering a check off service, and therefore any charge agreed between the trade unions and the employer, varies across the public sector, depending on the legacy payroll systems in place.

To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, what steps the Government is taking to establish a grant scheme to support charities providing rapid response vehicles for medical purposes.

    Greg Hands

The government is currently finalising the administration arrangements for the rapid response grant scheme which will open for applications this financial year. The scheme will cover the VAT costs incurred in the purchasing and fitting out of medical emergency rapid response vehicles by charities which are not already in scope of existing VAT refund schemes or are not already funded for VAT. The total grant available across the UK will be £100,000 in 2015-16.

Ian Austin – 2015 Parliamentary Question to the Department for Communities and Local Government

The below Parliamentary question was asked by Ian Austin on 2015-10-09.

To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, what steps his Department is taking to support private landlords in evicting tenants who are in breach of contract.

    Brandon Lewis

Assured shorthold tenancies give landlords the automatic right to possession at the end of the initial fixed term on giving the tenant two months’ notice. Possession through the courts can also be sought before the end of the initial fixed period, where the tenant has broken certain terms of the tenancy, such as by not paying the rent.

We have made it easier for landlords to evict a tenant where it would be legitimate to do so, by introducing a prescribed form of notice which will reduce errors and remove the need for a landlord to specify the exact date a tenancy comes to an end, while retaining the requirement to give two months’ notice. The legislation came into effect on 1 October 2015 and we have published guidance and the required forms are at: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/465275/Retaliatory_Eviction_Guidance_Note.pdf

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, what plans he has to support the expansion of children’s theatres across the UK.

    Mr Edward Vaizey

For example, 2012 – 2015 (year to date) NPO funding has provided over £74 million to organisations that provide support to children and young people’s theatre, while Grants for theArts has invested £4 million ofNationalLottery funds in theatre projects specifically for children and young people. TheGovernment’sTheatres Taxrelief, launched during the last Parliament, also supports new and touring theatre productions across the UK and includes children’s theatres.

  • Andrew Smith – 2015 Parliamentary Question to the Ministry of Defence

Andrew Smith – 2015 Parliamentary Question to the Ministry of Defence

The below Parliamentary question was asked by Andrew Smith on 2015-10-09.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, how many units of housing in the UK for military personnel are presently unoccupied in each local authority area.

    Mark Lancaster

The number of Service Family Accommodation properties unoccupied in each area is shown below.

Properties can be unoccupied for a number of reasons. These include:

A margin of unoccupied properties is retained, in the short term, to ensure they are available when Service personnel apply for accommodation.

A number of properties, which could otherwise be disposed of, are being retained pending the outcome of discussions on the future Defence requirement.

Properties may show as being unoccupied during a gap between allocation to, and occupation by, a Service family.

Where properties are leased from Annington Homes Ltd, not owned by the Ministry of Defence (MOD), and when the MOD no longer requires those properties the lease is terminated and the properties are handed back to Annington Homes Ltd. Some properties will be awaiting completion of that process.

A number of unoccupied properties are affected by dilapidations and await repair or disposal.

  • Steve McCabe – 2015 Parliamentary Question to the Department for Education

Steve McCabe – 2015 Parliamentary Question to the Department for Education

The below Parliamentary question was asked by Steve McCabe on 2015-10-09.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what options are available to parents who cannot send their children to a co-educated secondary school because of a lack of local availability and do not wish to set up a free school themselves.

    Edward Timpson

Local authorities are under a statutory duty to provide a sufficient supply of schools and school places that meet the needs of the communities they serve.

When a parent is refused a school place they have an unqualified right of appeal to an independent appeal panel. The decision of the appeal panel is binding – if the appeal is upheld, the admission authority must offer the child a place at the school.

If a local authority decides that there is a need for additional co-educational places in its area, it could either expand an existing co-educational school or set up a new Free School, via the free school presumption route.

The below Parliamentary question was asked by Ian Austin on 2015-10-09.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what recent assessment she has made of the (a) quality and (b) adequacy of the number of Ofsted inspectors.

    Nick Gibb

The assessment of the quality or adequacy of Ofsted inspectors is the responsibility of Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector.

  • Alan Brown – 2015 Parliamentary Question to the Department for Energy and Climate Change

Alan Brown – 2015 Parliamentary Question to the Department for Energy and Climate Change

The below Parliamentary question was asked by Alan Brown on 2015-10-09.

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, what decommissioning provision is allowed within the proposed strike rate of £92.50/MWh for the electricity from the proposed Hinkley Point C power station.

    Andrea Leadsom

The decommissioning costs for the Hinkley Point C power station, together with the waste management and waste disposal costs, account for £2-£3/MWh of the strike price.

  • Susan Elan Jones – 2015 Parliamentary Question to the Department for Energy and Climate Change

Susan Elan Jones – 2015 Parliamentary Question to the Department for Energy and Climate Change

The below Parliamentary question was asked by Susan Elan Jones on 2015-10-09.

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, if she will hold talks with the Financial Conduct Authority on lifting the moratorium on registering new renewable energy cooperatives.

    Andrea Leadsom

This Government strongly supports the community energy sector, including the mutual society model for community groups. However the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is an independent non-governmental body and it is important that the Government does not interfere with its work. The FCA recently consulted on their registration function under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014 and it is working to ensure the right balance is struck between investor protection and continued growth of this form of investment. The FCA will respond to this consultation later this year.
