    To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, how many full time members of staff in her Department have responsibility for malaria programmes.

    There are 12 full-time staff in the Health Services Team and Global Funds Department whose roles include work on malaria. In addition there are a wide range of staff across the Department, including research, press, policy, financial and corporate advisers and staff in the Regional Departments and country offices, whose roles include work on malaria.

    To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, what steps she is taking to promote the rights of women with disabilities and to ensure such women are empowered and achieve gender equality to the same extent as women without disabilities.

    DFID has put girls and women at the heart of international development and is committed to working with the Governments of developing countries to ensure that the issues faced by all vulnerable girls and women, including those with disabilities, are addressed in its programmes.

    On 13 May 2014, the International Development Gender Equality Act 2014 will come into law. This means that before development or humanitarian assistance is provided, the impact on gender equality – including for men and women with disabilities – must be considered within the poverty focus of the International Development Act.

    The UK supports formalisation of informal sector activities and employment. Language on this is included in the most recent draft goals and targets list released by the co-chairs of the Open Working Group (OWG) on 2 June.

    The final goals and targets in the post-2015 development framework will be subject to international negotiations in the United Nations, in which the UK will play an active role.

    To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, what steps she is taking to ensure that the millennium development goals and sustainable development goals are coherent with and integrated into the development agendas of all government departments.

    Ensuring that the Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals are coherent with and are integrated into the development agendas of all UK Government departments is a priority for this Government. DFID Ministers and officials work closely with other Government departments and through the National Security Council, Cabinet and Cabinet sub-Committees to ensure development coherence across HMG.

    The UK supports the strengthening of early warning and disaster risk reduction systems and related capacities with the aim of building resilience and protecting the poor and those in vulnerable situations from disasters and shocks, including climate-related extreme events.

    The final targets in the post-2015 development framework will however be subject to international negotiations in the United Nations, in which the UK will play an active role.

    To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, what steps she is taking to ensure that her Department gives full consideration to the increasing impact and challenges that ageing populations will place on national governments, civil society and relevant stakeholders (a) between 2015 and 2030 and (b) after 2030.

    The UK government welcomes the fact that life expectancy is increasing in developing countries and wants to see this positive trend continue. However, DFID also recognises that this brings new challenges, which the post-2015 framework should address. The High Level Panel, co-chaired by the Prime Minister, acknowledged this in its report to the UN Secretary General through its call to ‘leave no one behind.’

    Despite remarkable progress, some countries are off-track to meet MDG targets. In response, the Government has increased development assistance to fragile states, driven forward work to help unlock the potential of girls and women and focused more resources on creating the jobs, investment and growth that emerging and frontier markets need to escape poverty.

    To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, what steps her Department is taking to prevent famine in South Sudan.

    The UK is the second largest donor to the Crisis Response Plan for South Sudan, and we are working with the UN and other donors to raise the prominence of the appeal, and secure new and increased commitments of funds. DFID has contributed £20.8 million of new humanitarian funding in South Sudan since December 2013. We have also allocated £17 million to support the refugee response in neighbouring countries.
