    Bank holiday proclaimed in honour of the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III

    The Prime Minister has decided to proclaim an additional bank holiday to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III next year.

    The bank holiday will fall on Monday 8 May, following the Coronation on Saturday 6 May.

    In line with the bank holiday to mark Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation in 1953, this will be an opportunity for families and communities across the country to come together to celebrate.

    The bank holiday will take place across the United Kingdom.

    Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said:

    “The Coronation of a new monarch is a unique moment for our country. In recognition of this historic occasion, I am pleased to announce an additional bank holiday for the whole United Kingdom next year.”

    “I look forward to seeing people come together to celebrate and pay tribute to King Charles III by taking part in local and national events across the country in his honour.”

    Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Oliver Dowden said:

    “The Coronation combines the sacred and the solemn but it is also celebratory.”

    “This bank holiday will once again give people across the United Kingdom the opportunity to come together as families and communities to welcome His Majesty to the throne as we mark this important day in our nation’s long history.”

    PRESS RELEASE : Appointment of a new Lady Justice of Appeal [November 2022]

    His Majesty The King has approved the appointment of Mrs Justice Falk as a Lady Justice of Appeal in the Court of Appeal.

    The Court of Appeal is the Senior Court of Appeal in England and Wales. The Court consists of Senior judges including The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Master of the Rolls, and the Heads of Division of the High Court, alongside Lord or Lady Justices of Appeal.

    The appointment of Lord and Lady Justices of the Court of Appeal are made by His Majesty The King on the advice of the Prime Minister and the Lord Chancellor following the recommendation of an independent selection panel.

    The selection panel was chaired by Lord Chief Justice, Lord Burnett of Maldon. Panel members include Sir Geoffrey Vos, the Master of the Rolls; Lord Kakkar, the Chairman of the Judicial Appointments Commission; and lay Judicial Appointments Commissioners, Ms Sue Hoyle OBE and Ms Jane Furniss CBE.

    Biography

    Mrs Justice Falk qualified as a solicitor in 1986 and went on to become a partner at a city law firm. In 2015 she was appointed as a fee-paid deputy judge of the Upper Tribunal (Tax and Chancery Chamber).  From then until her appointment to the High Court she sat regularly in the First-tier Tax Tribunal and Upper Tribunal.  She was appointed as a High Court Judge in 2018, assigned to the Chancery Division. She was a Judicial Commissioner of the Judicial Appointments Commission from 2019 to 2022.

    Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke to the Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, this afternoon.

    The Prime Minister thanked Prime Minister Rutte for his warm congratulations on his appointment, and said he looked forward to working closely with the Netherlands.

    The leaders highlighted how as transatlantic facing countries, they both faced a unique set of challenges and opportunities.

    Discussing illegal migration, the leaders reflected on the difficulties posed by people smuggling gangs and discussed how the UK and the Netherlands could work with partners on a joint approach.

    Both agreed on the need for deeper cooperation on shared challenges.

    The leaders agreed to stay in close touch in the coming weeks.

    The Prime Minister spoke to French President Macron this morning.

    President Macron congratulated him on his appointment, and the Prime Minister stressed the importance he places on the UK’s relationship with France – our neighbour and ally.

    The leaders agreed that there are a huge range of areas where UK-France cooperation is vital, including on Ukraine, climate, defence and the economy. The Prime Minister also noted the strong historic and cultural links between our countries, as exemplified by President Macron’s moving words following the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

    The Prime Minister and President Macron discussed a range of global issues, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. They agreed on the importance of continuing to work in support of Ukraine. As people across Europe face a difficult winter, with rising energy costs resulting from Putin’s invasion, the leaders resolved to work together to secure a more stable energy future. This includes increasing cooperation on nuclear energy.

    The Prime Minister stressed the importance for both nations to make the Channel route completely unviable for people traffickers. The leaders committed to deepening our partnership to deter deadly journeys across the Channel that benefit organised criminals.

    The Prime Minister and President Macron looked forward to meeting soon, and to holding a UK-France Summit next year.

    Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this evening, committing to continue the strong partnership between our two countries.

    The leaders welcomed the close alignment between the UK and Canada’s values and priorities, noting the important role of free market democracies in promoting global economic growth and stability.

    They discussed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and agreed to continue working together to provide unequivocal support for Ukraine and ensure Vladimir Putin’s actions do not go unpunished or undeterred.

    The Prime Minister also welcomed Canada’s support for the UK’s accession to the CPTPP Pacific trade bloc, and the leaders committed to deepen collaboration in trade and energy security.

    They looked forward to working closely together through the G7 and bilaterally, and to meeting at the G20 in Indonesia next month.

    Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, this afternoon.

    Prime Minister Modi conveyed his best wishes on the Prime Minister’s appointment on behalf of 1.6 billion Indians.

    The Prime Minister said he was a visual representation of the historic links between the UK and India, and intended to build on this relationship to develop ever closer ties between our two countries.

    Discussing shared global challenges, the Prime Minister praised Prime Minister Modi’s leadership on tackling climate change and the leaders welcomed opportunities to bolster our security, defence and economic partnership.

    The Prime Minister hoped the UK and India could continue to make good progress in negotiations to finalise a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement.

    The leaders also agreed to work together as two great democracies to strengthen the developing economies of the world, and looked forward to meeting in person at the G20 in Indonesia.

    The Prime Minister spoke to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this evening.

    The leaders stressed the importance they both place on the relationship between the UK and EU, and on working together as friends and allies.

    The Prime Minister pointed to the united response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, particularly on the implementation of unprecedented sanctions, as an example of the value of UK-EU cooperation.

    The Prime Minister and President von der Leyen agreed that the UK and EU have much in common, not least the challenges we are facing in areas like the economy and climate change. They resolved to work closely together to tackle those challenges.

    On the Northern Ireland Protocol, the Prime Minister restated his preference for exploring a negotiated solution to the current issues.

    The Prime Minister and President von der Leyen looked forward to meeting in person soon.

    Discussing the Northern Ireland Protocol, the Prime Minister set out that his preference remained a negotiated outcome and hoped all parties would approach the current challenges with pragmatism and goodwill.

    The leaders agreed on the urgent need for a functioning executive in Northern Ireland.

    Both undertook to continue discussions in the coming weeks and months.
