    The Prime Minister spoke to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, this morning.

    The leaders welcomed the US’ continued push for a just and lasting peace, and agreed it was clear no party wanted that more than Ukraine.

    The Prime Minister paid tribute to the resilience of the Ukrainian people, who continued to suffer as Russia bombarded cities with missiles and drones, and systematically destroyed critical national infrastructure to plunge families and the elderly into the cold and dark.

    The Prime Minister welcomed National Security Advisor level discussions in Kyiv today, and looked forward to leaders progressing that work in Paris on Tuesday.

    They discussed the ongoing work to ensure a multi-national force could deploy to Ukraine in the days following a ceasefire.

    The Prime Minister welcomed the appointment of Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov as the head of the Office of the President in Ukraine, and said his team looked forward to working closely with him.

    The leaders agreed to stay in close touch.

    The Prime Minister met Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever in Downing Street this afternoon.

    The leaders welcomed the close and growing relationship between their two countries on a range of shared priorities, with an emphasis on migration, security and growth. 

    On Ukraine, they discussed the latest on peace talks and agreed that these were at a pivotal moment for Ukraine’s future. It was clear, they agreed, that keeping up the economic pressure on Russia and putting Ukraine in the strongest possible position would remain the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace.

    They discussed ongoing work, together with European partners, on addressing Ukraine’s financial needs, including through the use of the value of immobilised Russian Sovereign Assets. They agreed to continue to work together closely to make progress on this complex issue.

    The Prime Minister also welcomed agreement from Belgium to strengthen efforts to tackle the shared challenge of illegal migration, including greater collaboration on innovative solutions on returns and readmissions and enhanced law enforcement cooperation.

    President Zelenskyy updated the group on the continued Russian bombardment of Ukraine, killing innocent civilians and destroying critical infrastructure.

    The leaders then discussed the significant progress made in starving Russia’s war machine through coordinated sanctions and enforcement, and in stepping up support for Ukraine. They also discussed the progress made on mobilising frozen Russian Sovereign Assets.

    As Ukraine enters its fourth winter of fighting, the leaders agreed on the importance of continuing to fund military support. The Prime Minister underscored that the UK would continue to work closely with partners to maintain pressure on Russia and provide Ukraine with the support it needs for as long as it takes.

    The King has approved the nomination of the Venerable Jean Ann Burgess, MA, to the Suffragan See of Grimsby, in the Diocese of Lincoln.

    Background

    The King has approved the nomination of the Venerable Jean Ann Burgess, MA, Archdeacon of Bournemouth, in the Diocese of Winchester, to the Suffragan See of Grimsby, in the Diocese of Lincoln, in succession to the Right Reverend Dr David Court following his retirement.

    Jean was trained for ministry via the East Midlands Ministry Training Course, accredited by Nottingham University.

    She served her title at St George and St Mary’s Church, Gresley, in the Diocese of Derby, and was ordained Priest in 2004. Jean served as Interim Minister at St Alkmund’s and St Werburgh’s from 2008 and was appointed Priest-in-Charge in 2013 and incumbent in 2018. Jean served as Archdeacon of Bolton and Archdeacon of Salford, both in the Diocese of Manchester, from 2018.

    In 2023, Jean took up her current role as Archdeacon of Bournemouth, in the Diocese of Winchester.
