    The transport of Defence Nuclear Material is regulated by the Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator according to the provisions of Joint Service Publication 538, Regulation of the Nuclear Weapon Programme, available at: www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/341332/20140801_JSP_538_V3_1_Pt_1.pdf

    A wide range of safety and contingency measures are in place to ensure the safety of nuclear convoy operations.     To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, whether his Department has made an evaluation of which assets will be transferred from the fleet of T23 Frigates to the fleet of T26 Frigates.

    The Type 23 capability sustainment programme will de-risk the introduction of the Type 26 Global Combat Ship, and deliver cost savings by bringing equipment into service in the Type 23 Frigates before transitioning to the Type 26. The Sea Ceptor Anti-Air Missile system and the Artisan 997 Air Surveillance Radar are examples of this.

    To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what modifications are required to HMS Prince of Wales to make it suitable for use as an amphibious assault platform.

    In the Strategic Defence and Security Review 2015 we announced the intention to enhance a Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier to support the UK’s amphibious capability. We are currently assessing the modifications that may be required and the optimum way to deliver these enhancements, which we expect will have utility in both carriers. As well as delivering their primary Carrier Strike role with F-35B Lightning II aircraft, the carriers will offer a significant basing option for the projection of air support to amphibious operations, including battlefield helicopter support to our Royal Marines or embarked military forces.

    The six Daring-class Type 45 destroyers were berthed together in Her Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth for 34 days this summer. The ships had either just returned from operations, were preparing for imminent deployment, conducting training, undergoing maintenance or on leave.

    To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what risk assessment his Department has made of the Autonomous Logistics Information System during testing for the F35B Lightning II fighter.

    The Autonomous Logistics Information System is part of the ground based information system and is not fitted on board the F-35B Lightning II fighter aircraft. Both the Autonomous Logistics Information System and the F-35B Lightning II fighter aircraft have been subject to a comprehensive independent programme of penetration testing.

    Risk assessments of the Autonomous Logistics Information System and its interfaces with the F-35B Lightning II fighter are conducted continuously throughout the test programme. All classified data transmissions to and from the F-35B Lightning II fighter aircraft are fully encrypted.

    To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, how many take-off tests for the F35B Lightning II have been completed using the Queen Elizabeth-class simulating ski ramp at US NAS Patuxent River.

    F-35B ski ramp jump testing at Naval Air Station Patuxent River began in 2015 and, as at 31 December 2015, 20 test launches had successfully been completed. The programme of test launches from the land-based ski jump ramp is scheduled to be completed in late 2017.
