Stuart Andrew – 2022 Comments on Full Sutton Prison

The comments made by Stuart Andrew, the Prisons Minister, on 3 August 2022.

I am delighted work can begin on yet another modern, innovative prison that will skill-up untold numbers of offenders to live a crime-free life while making our streets safer.

The new prison at Full Sutton will also support hundreds of jobs, in construction and afterwards, representing a major boost to Yorkshire’s economy.

Sadiq Khan – 2022 Comments on Expanding ULEZ

The comments made by Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, on 29 July 2022.

The health of Londoners across the capital is being damaged by air pollution and I’m doing all I can to improve it. This data shows how important it is to take bold action that benefits all Londoners. If the zone is expanded, five million people living in the outer boroughs would also be able to breathe cleaner, less polluted air and this is why I’ve been consulting on expanding the ULEZ London-wide.

Deadly air pollution contributes to children developing stunted lungs, asthma and a whole host of other health issues and new research has shown that it also puts people at increased risk of developing dementia. We need to act now to protect the most vulnerable from the worst consequences of toxic air and build a safer, fairer, greener and more prosperous city for everyone.

  • Sadiq Khan – 2022 Comments on Tree Planting Projects in London

Sadiq Khan – 2022 Comments on Tree Planting Projects in London

The comments made by Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, on 28 July 2022.

The extreme temperatures and fires that raged across the capital last week laid bare how vulnerable London is to the effects of climate change, which is why today I’ve pledged a further £3.1m for a mass tree-planting package to help limit the impacts of the climate emergency and the ecological crisis. These additional street trees and improvements to green spaces are targeted in areas where they’re most needed and will improve resilience of neighbourhoods in our city.

The climate emergency is the biggest global threat we face today and we know that it doesn’t impact all Londoners equally, with communities suffering poverty, deprivation and health inequalities more likely to experience the worst effects of flooding, overheating and poor quality air. As Mayor, I will continue my bold action to preserve and increase tree coverage across the capital as we build a better, greener and more sustainable London for everyone.

  • Sadiq Khan – 2022 Comments on County Lines Gangs

Sadiq Khan – 2022 Comments on County Lines Gangs

The comments made by Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, on 27 July 2022.

It’s vital that we support young people and keep them safe from exploitation by criminal gangs.

I am determined to ensure we provide an escape route for young Londoners who feel trapped and I’m pleased the Rescue and Response programme is working to break the chain of criminality that holds some of our most vulnerable young men, women, girls and boys hostage.

Thanks to this programme, more than 450 young people have benefited from positive opportunities to help change their lives for the better and divert them away from exploitation by criminal gangs.

I know we’re only scratching the surface of a major national issue that is still driving violence in London and across the country, but that is why I will continue to invest record amounts in programmes that intervene in the key moments in a person’s life, to divert them away from crime and build a safer London for everyone.

  • Victoria Prentis – 2022 Comments on Fishing Research Projects

Victoria Prentis – 2022 Comments on Fishing Research Projects

The comments made by Victoria Prentis, the Fisheries Minister, on 2 August 2022.

Our world-class fishing and seafood sectors are packed full of expertise and innovation, and the UK Seafood Fund is making sure these excellent schemes have the financial backing needed to succeed.

We are already seeing tangible results – from LED lights in fishing nets to attract target species and deter bycatch through to novel whelk pot designs.

I want our fishing industry to thrive, to be more sustainable and to invest in the people who will make it a success for decades ahead – so I encourage everyone to bring forward their pioneering ideas.

  • Simon Clarke – 2022 Comments on the New Public Sector Fraud Authority

Simon Clarke – 2022 Comments on the New Public Sector Fraud Authority

The comments made by Simon Clarke, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, on 3 August 2022.

The launch of the new body will put a laser-like focus on fraud and renew our efforts to combat people taking advantage of our public services and support.

It will reinforce wider investment in government to crack down on fraud and mis-claiming, including £210 million for HMRC to further tackle fraud, and £510 million for DWP to target welfare fraud in 2021.

Tackling fraud will drive efficiency, saving taxpayers’ hard-earned money which is even more important as we know people are struggling with the rising cost of living.

  • Jacob Rees-Mogg – 2022 Comments on the New Public Sector Fraud Authority

Jacob Rees-Mogg – 2022 Comments on the New Public Sector Fraud Authority

The speech made by Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Minister for Government Efficiency, on 3 August 2022.

Public sector fraud is not an attack on a single person, and so to many the pain feels less sharp than when directed at individuals. But fraud attacks on government are attacks on money earned by much put-upon taxpayers.

They are an attack on the emergency services whose funding they deplete, similarly they steal money from infrastructure projects.

As criminals develop more sophisticated tools, we too must adapt and modernise.

So we’re attracting the brightest minds and equipping them with tools to detect, prevent and deter those who seek to steal money intended to fund vital public services.

  • Conor Murphy – 2022 Comments on Cost of Living Crisis in Northern Ireland

Conor Murphy – 2022 Comments on Cost of Living Crisis in Northern Ireland

The comments made by Conor Murphy, the Finance Minister in Northern Ireland, on 1 August 2022.

We have repeatedly told the British government that they must act to support workers and families through the cost-of-living crisis as they struggle to pay their bills.

They should start by calling time on big energy companies – whose profits are through the roof – and ensure they pay their way and aren’t ripping off ordinary people.

Executive departments need more money to deal with the rise in inflation and the huge spike in living costs. The British government must step up and provide more money to ensure that can happen.

They have failed to help businesses under pressure with rising costs, they need action now to keep their doors open and protect jobs.

This is the big challenge facing workers and families this winter. We need an Executive up and running immediately so we can start putting money in people’s pockets.

The DUP should end its boycott, rejoin the Executive and work with the rest of us to put the interests of workers and families first.

  • Greg Clark – 2022 Comments on Yorkshire Day

Greg Clark – 2022 Comments on Yorkshire Day

The comments made by Greg Clark, the Levelling Up Secretary, on 1 August 2022.

Yorkshire Day 2022 is an historic one. It marks the return of powers and resources from London to much of the historic North Riding.

Levelling up – driving prosperity and opportunity in all parts of Britain – is done best when people locally can forge the future of their area. This deal is a big step in that direction.

  • Rishi Sunak – 2015 Comments on AV Dawson

Rishi Sunak – 2015 Comments on AV Dawson

The comments made by Rishi Sunak, the then Conservative PPC for Richmond, on 4 February 2015.

I had the great pleasure of driving a locomotive to open a new facility at AV Dawson!

The Dawson family founded the business 77 years ago. Today is it is a leading multi-modal logistics firm with a world class facility on the River Tees. The business is run by Gary Dawson, whose grandparents Vernon and Eleanor established the buisness. All they started with was a horse called Dina, a cart and a barrel load of coal! After some incredibly hard work by them and Gary’s father Maurice, the business now has revenues of almost £20m, 250 employees and global customers like Tata Steel and Nissan.

The government set up a £3 billion Regional Growth Fund to help create jobs in areas where they are needed the most. AV Dawson benefitted from a multi millions pound RGF grant to help them build a state of the art new steel warehouse – the largest investment in their company’s history. The company also increased employment significantly. The new facility sets the standard in service, environmental sustainability and innovation. Nationally the RGF is predicted to help create half a million jobs!

This is a fantastic example of investment in the North helping drive job creation and prosperity. Congratulations to everybody on AV Dawson on building such a great business. Thanks for giving me the fantastic opportunity to drive the train and blow that horn so loudly!
