Sadiq Khan – 2022 Comments on a Rent Freeze in London

The comments made by Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, on 9 March 2022.

Private renters make up nearly a third of everyone living in the capital and they are set to be hit by a devastating combination of price and bill rises. Too often the needs of private renters are ignored by both landlords and the Government.

Rising fuel and energy costs – which will hit renters in energy inefficient homes the hardest – are already causing anxiety and stress, with a big rise in the energy price cap due next month. That’s why today I’m calling on ministers to give me the powers to stop rents rising in the capital, and help me to give people a chance to get back on their feet after the pandemic.

  • Nadine Dorries – 2022 Statement on Chelsea Football Club

Nadine Dorries – 2022 Statement on Chelsea Football Club

The statement made by Nadine Dorries, the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport on 10 March 2022.

Putin’s attack on Ukraine continues and we are witnessing new levels of evil by the hour. We are now turning the screw on influential oligarchs enabling his regime.

The important measures announced today will clearly have a direct impact on Chelsea FC and its fans but we are working hard to make sure the club and the national game are not unnecessarily harmed.

We have granted the club a licence so it can fulfil its fixtures, pay its staff and existing ticket holders can attend matches. We know football clubs are cultural assets and we are committed to protecting them.

  • Sadiq Khan – 2022 Comments on Russian Oligarchs

Sadiq Khan – 2022 Comments on Russian Oligarchs

The comments made by Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, on 6 March 2022.

Nobody expected sanctioning President Putin’s allies in the UK to be straight forward, these are some of the richest and most powerful people in the world. But it is completely unacceptable that ministers are offering them such easy loopholes to disguise or liquidate their assets before the state can act.

London can no longer be a laundromat for oligarchs’ finances. We know there is at least £1.1bn of property in London linked to the Kremlin, along with millions of pounds worth of art, cars, boats and other goods. Meanwhile, Ukraine calls for aid as the Russian army advances on Kyiv.

We need the powers and political will to turn the ill-gotten gains of Putin-allies into Ukrainian aid. Ministers must not delay whilst Ukraine burns.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy – 2022 Comments on Russian Military Attacking Holocaust Site

The comments made by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, on 1 March 2022.

To the world: what is the point of saying “never again” for 80 years, if the world stays silent when a bomb drops on the same site of Babyn Yar? At least 5 killed. History repeating…

Jeremy Corbyn – 2022 Comments on Opposing NATO Expansion

The comments made by Jeremy Corbyn, the Independent MP for Islington North, on 22 February 2022.

The Russian forces that have entered Eastern Ukraine should immediately withdraw.

The UK government should encourage a return to the Minsk-2 agreement to end the crisis and oppose further eastward NATO expansion.

    Diplomacy must resume.

  • Sadiq Khan – 2022 Comments on Violence Towards Women and Girls

Sadiq Khan – 2022 Comments on Violence Towards Women and Girls

The comments made by Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, on 27 February 2022.

It is simply not right that women and girls across our country feel unsafe going about their daily lives. We have to be clear – these problems are caused by the unacceptable attitudes and behaviours of too many men. This is not just an issue with the minority of men who are violent, but also with those men who are sexist, who continue to behave inappropriately around women, who perpetuate a toxic form of masculinity or who just stand by silently when women feel threatened or are being threatened. Men must change.

That is why I am launching a new campaign to help tackle the appalling attitudes and behaviours that need to change. If we are going to truly fix the problem of violence against women and girls we need to see a fundamental cultural shift which puts the onus of responsibility on men. It must include men calling out and choosing to reject sexism and misogyny, which if left unchecked or unchallenged can lead to abuse and violence towards women and girls.

Eddie Hughes – 2022 Comments on Rough Sleeping

The comments made by Eddie Hughes, the Housing Minister, on 24 February 2022.

The government remains focused on ending rough sleeping by the end of this parliament and we’re making excellent progress towards this.

Today’s figures are testament to that, showing our investment is helping more people have a roof over their heads and the best possible chance of turning their lives around.
