What fantastic news from Hungary. Proof that if you stand up to it right wing kleptocratic populist authoritarianism can be beaten. Orban will now flee somewhere with his wealth. But this is more than a bad night for him. It is a bad night for Putin who as in Moldova spent a fortune trying to rig it. It is a bad night for Trump. It is a bad night for Vance and Rubio who believed that their mere presence in Budapest would swing the vote Orban’s way. They helped Magyar!

It is a bad night for Farage the AfD and Le Pen because it shows that when their brand of politics is exposed to serious opposition and scrutiny it collapses. Magyar is far from the perfect leader but my God he deserves all the congratulations coming his way for ousting Orban and showing how it can be done. He now has the tough job of dismantling the corrupt systems and bodies installed over 16 years. The people of Hungary deserve our thanks for showing these people can be beaten. And Zelensky now deserves far greater support from Europe.

Alastair Campbell – 2024 Tribute to John Prescott

The tribute made by Alistair Campbell on 21 November 2024.

JP RIP. There was nobody else like him. Tony could not have had a better deputy. Labour could not have had a better campaigner. The government could not have had a better negotiator and – yes, often, peacemaker. Hull could not have had a better MP. Of course he was combative but he had an enormous heart and a great capacity for friendship. Even with his horrible illness in later years, the old JP was always there. Love to Pauline, Jonathan and David and nothing but fond memories of a total one off who will be missed by so many.

  • Alastair Campbell – 2023 Comments After Commons Report Published that Boris Johnson Knowingly Lied to Parliament

Alastair Campbell – 2023 Comments After Commons Report Published that Boris Johnson Knowingly Lied to Parliament

The comments made by Alastair Campbell, the former Director of Communications at Downing Street, on Twitter on 15 June 2023.

Given Privileges Committee report (and well done to those Tories especially who refused to be cowed by the Trumpian nonsense) Sunak now needs to step up and make clear the following … 1. none of the resignation honours will go forward. (Those who have taken them in the past should return them, including Lords appointees) 2. Johnson will not be entitled to the usual ex-PM allowance. 3. He will not be part of the Remembrance Day ceremony or other events where ex PMs are expected to attend. 4. He will be asked to repay legal costs.

For politics to recover from the damage Johnson has done to it, it must be made crystal clear that the kind of conduct in which he indulged leads not merely to loss of power but opprobrium. He deserves nothing less. And Sunak must lead if standards are to be raised.

Alastair Campbell – 2023 Article in Support of Gary Lineker

An excerpt from the article written by Alastair Campbell in the New European on 8 March 2023.

“Language not dissimilar to Germany in the 1930s,” says Lineker. Too bloody right. Swarms. Invasions. Left wing lawyers. The liberal elite. They all starred in the story of the rise of fascism. Judges as “Enemies of the People?” Remember that one, which not a single member of this government condemned? Exactly what the pro-Hitler press called judges in the 30s.

Indeed, if I were doing a media studies PhD right now I would be tempted to analyse the similarities between Der Stürmer and the Völkischer Beobachter in ‘30s Germany and the Mail, Express and Co of recent decades here, in terms of headlines, story selection, consistency of populist messaging, denial of critical voices.

Polarisation. Populism. Post-truth. The 3Ps of modern autocracy. I honestly thought Sunak might be different. He is certainly not as incontinently dishonest as Johnson, or as utterly useless as Liz Truss. But that is such a low bar it is hardly worth making the comparison. On the 3Ps, at his “stop the boats” press conference and in his exchanges with Keir Starmer in the Commons, he showed himself to be just as bad as his predecessors.

Alastair Campbell – 2022 Comments on Matt Hancock Going on I’m a Celebrity

The comments made by Alastair Campbell, the former Director of Communications at 10 Downing Street, on Twitter on 1 November 2022.

Of course perfectly understandable that Matt Hancock loses the whip for deciding to become a national joke by going on I’m a celeb. But what about Johnson and his never-ending holidays? Added to which both should be charged over Covid misconduct in public office anyway!!

Alastair Campbell – 2022 Comments on the Personal Conduct of Boris Johnson

The comments made by Alastair Campbell, the former Director of Communications at Downing Street, on Twitter on 22 October 2022.

To think the poor guy had to pretend he flies economy – hard not to feel sorry for him. Until you remember he is a lying, lawbreaking, immoral charlatan who has trashed the UK reputation, made us poorer, weaker and less respected in the world, and cares only about himself.

Alastair Campbell – 2022 Comments on a Liz Truss Resignation Honours List

The comments made by Alastair Campbell, the former Director of Communications, on Twitter on 20 October 2022.

Neither she [Liz Truss] nor Johnson should be allowed a resignation honours list. They have no honour. They have disgraced and debased an office they should never have held.

Alastair Campbell – 2022 Comments on Appointment of Grant Shapps as Home Secretary

The comments made by Alastair Campbell, the former Director of Communications in Downing Street, on Twitter on 19 October 2022.

If true that Grant Shapps is now the Home Secretary it means that in Trussland your way to a top job is to go around with a spreadsheet and tell everyone “she’s toast!” Nobody will shed tears at Braverman departing but wtf …. This is omnishambolic on a gargantuan scale

Alastair Campbell – 2022 Comments on Liz Truss Not Appearing for Urgent Question

The comments made by Alastair Campbell, the former Director of Communications at Downing Street, on Twitter on 17 October 2022.

For Liz Truss not to turn up for an urgent question underlines that even she knows she has no authority left. She now has one major opponent as chancellor. Another as her stand in for the statement she should be giving. Every second she stays she does more damage to the country.

Alastair Campbell – 2022 Comments on the Dismissal of Kwasi Kwarteng

The comments made by Alastair Campbell on Twitter on 14 October 2022.

I know we are talking small sums compared to the many billions spaffed on extra borrowing costs, not to mention the Covid billions wasted and lost to incompetence and corruption. But another consequence of the constant ministerial merry go round under Johnson and Truss is the continuing cost to the public purse after these useless charlatans lose their jobs. Johnson gets a huge PM allowance for life. They get pay-offs/pensions that rise because they have been “ministers.” The system has to be changed. Incompetence cannot keep being rewarded
