Mr. J. M. Bannerman contested Argyll in the 1945 election. Educated at Glasgow University and Balliol College, Oxford, he holds a B.Sc.(Agric) degree and is now a factor and farmer. He has captained Scotland and Rugby and is known throughout the Highlands as a Gaelic singer. He was born in 1901.

Dr. R. D. McIntyre lost the seat to Labour in 1945 after having had the distinction of being the first Scottish Nationalist M.P. He was a member for only 32 days. A native of Motherwell and son of a former local minister, he was educated at Hamilton Academy, Daniel Stewart’s College, Edinburgh, and Edinburgh University. He is chairman of the Scottish Nationalist Party.

Mr. W. McN. Snadden won Kinross and Western in 1939 in a by-election from the Duchess of Atholl, who resigned from the Conservative Party and stood as an Independent. A son of the manse, he served in the 1914-18 war and from 1939-40 was Parliam?ntary private secretary to the Under-Secretary for Scotland. An extensive farmer and stock breeder in Perthshire, he has been a champion of the rights of Scottish agriculture.

He is on the executive of the Scottish Liberal Federation and a past chairman of the Edinburgh Liberal Council. He served with the 51st Highland Division during the last war and was wounded.

Lt.-Col. M. Lipton, Who won Brixton for the Labour Party in 1945, was born in 1900 in ^underland and went to Oxford with a scholar-snip- He studied law and was called to the Bar in 1926. He became an alderman of Lambeth Borough Council. A Private in the Territorial Army before the war, ne rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. His recreation is ” giving aavice,” and he has conducted a free advice bureau m Brixton since 1933.

BIOGRAPHY :

Mr. J. W. Jones, aged 49, is a London bus “river. He was secretary of the London Busmen’s Rank and File Movement, 1932-37, and took a leading part in the strike in 1937. Expelled from the Transport and General Workers’ Union in 1937, he was readmitted in ^ 38, and became chairman of the Central Bus Committee in 1944. He was elected to the executive committee in 1943, but the rule debarring Communists from holding office in the union prevented his sitting on the committee. He is vice-chairman of the London District Committee of the Communist Party.
