He is managing director of a family drapery business, and a member of Derby Town Council.

He was mayor of the borough in 1946-47.

He was personal staff officer to the Chief of Staff in the North African campaign in 1943 and was Plans and Operations officer at General Eisenhower’s headquarters from 1943 to D Day.
