    Mr. I. R. Mitchell, a Glasgow solicitor, was born in 1912, a son of Mr. E. Rosslyn Mitchell, who defeated the late Mr. Asquith (afterwards the Earl of Oxford and Asquith) in Paisley. As a lecturer he has been active in Labour propaganda locally, and he served as a corporal in the R.A.F. during the war.

    Mr. Walter Elliot, who had previously represented Lanark, Kel-vingrove, and the Scottish Universities, returned to fight Kelvingrove after the university seats were abolished. He had been defeated here in the 1945 election by only 48 votes, after having been member for the division since 1924. He has held a number of offices, including that of Secretary of State for Scotland, Minister of Agriculture, and Minister of Health. He holds honorary degrees from five universities. Born in 1888, he was educated at Glasgow Academy and Glasgow University.

    Mr. T. F. Hubbard, elected for Kirkcaldy in 1944, is an official miners’ candidate — one of four in Scotland. He is president of the Scottish Old Age Pensioners’ Association. Born in 1898 and starting work as a grocer’s apprentice, he became a miner and continued in that capacity until he received a serious leg injury in 1941. He is vice-president of the British association of old-age pensioners.

A Regular Army officer for 13 years, he retired as a major in 1947. He is manager of a mixed farm near Aberdeen, and managing director of an Aber-de^n firm. He is an advocate of co-partnership.
