Born in Highcliffe, Hampshire, he went to Bath in 1933, and controls a motor tyres and spares business. Treasurer of the Somerset Diocesan Mission to the Deaf and Dumb, he has raised many thousands of pounds for this work, and is active in other social service movements.

    Mr. A. Colegate represented The Wrekin from 1940 to 1945, when he was defeated. Educated at London University, where he took an honours degree in science, he enlisted for active service in the first world war but was seconded for special service in the Board of Trade. In 1947 he was appointed chairman of the West Midlands Area Conservative and Unionist Associations, and is a member of the central executive of the Conservative Party. He has been a governor of Harper Adams Agricultural College.

He is also a practical farmer, and a member of the Campaign Committee of the Yorkshire Liberal Federation.
