Rejoining The Black Watch on the outbreak of war, he was on General Eisenhower’s staff for the final attack on Germany. He lost his seat in Parliament in 1945. He farms an estate at Birkhill, Fife.

He has served on Glasgow Town Council and is a member of the Co-operative movement.
