    Mr. D. V. Leadbeater, 41, graduated at the University of Wales with first-class honours in English, and in 1929 was president of the Debates Union there. A grammar schoolmaster at Mold, he is also a university extension lecturer and tutor in English and current affairs. During the war he was an education and welfare officer in the National Fire Service. He is well known in North and South Wales .as a Rugby player.

    Mr. W. E. Padley, is 33 and was educated at Chipping Norton Grammar School and Ruskin College, Oxford. Active in the Labour movement since 1932, at one time he was a close colleague of James Maxton in the leadership of the I.L.P. He is president of the Union of Shop, Distributive, and Allied Workers, and from 1941 to 1946 was a member of the I.L.P. national council.

He is treasurer of the Hardwicke Debating Society, and has been a member of the executive of the Chelsea Conservative Association.

After service in the Royal Artillery in the war, he became Communist Party secretary for South-East Scotland.

    Mr. M. MacPherson won the seat in a by-election in October, 1948, which followed the death in a motor-car accident of Mr. J. Westwood, Secretary of State for Scotland. In 1945 he had unsuccessfully contested Yeovil. Born in 1904, eldest son of a keeper of the Bass Rock lighthouse, he was Dux scholar at Trinity Academy, Leith, and graduated at Edinburgh University. For 10 years a lecturer at the University of New Brunswick, he later joined the staff of University College, Exeter. He served with the Canadian Army in the last war, rising to the rank of major.
