    Mr. W. N. Cuthbert, mayor of Bexhill, 1936-42, was elected for Rye in 1945. He is 60, was trained in banking in Scotland and London and held executive posts with the Imperial Bank of Persia for 21 years. After serving in the Army 1914-19, he was elected to Bexhill Council, and in 1943 was given the freedom of the borough. He resigned his county council seat on election to Parliament.

From 1945 to 1949 he was a member of Pudsey Borough Council, and has been president of the divisional Labour Party organization.

He was chairman of Cardiff University College Conservative Association, 1936-39, and chairman of the Conservative Political Education Committee for Wales and Monmouth, 1946-49. During the war he was a surgeon-commander with the Royal Navy.

He served with the Army during the war and rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He was a member of Caernarvonshire County Council, but resigned in 1941. He won Caernarvon Boroughs from the Liberals in 1945.
