An active trade unionist in Dunstable, he is a bookbinder and chairman of Luton Trades Council. He was one of the founders of the Dunstable Labour Party. During the war he served with S.E.A.C.

His particular interest is prison welfare, and he is an official visitor to Reading Gaol, where he gives talks on current affairs. He is chairman of the divisional Labour Party and secretary of Berks Federation of Labour Parties.

    Mr. A. E. Stubbs, who won this seat in 1945, is a native of Yorkshire, born in 1877. He went to Cambridge as a printing machinist in 1914 and two years later became president of the Cambridge Trades Council and Labour Party. After 19 years on the Cambridge borough council he was made an alderman in 1942, in which year he was also appointed an alderman of the county council. He is chairman of the workers’ side of the Agricultural Wages Committee.

Called to the Bar in 1927, he was appointed Recorder of Dudley in 1936 and of Oxford in 1938. He served at the British Embassy in Washington handling the legal side of lend-lease, and was later a brigadier on Gen. Eisenhower’s staff in Normandy. He is 43.

He sat as M.P. for Whitehaven from 1931 to 1935, and for Newcastle West from 1940 to 1945.

    Mr. D. Heathcoat Amory became M.P. for the division in 1945 in succession to Sir G. Acland Troyte. Born in 1899 and educated at Eton and Oxford, he is a silk manufacturer and banker. A member of Devon County Council since 1932, he has also served on many other local government bodies, and is a governor of Blundell’s School and a former joint master of the Tiverton Foxhounds. For 20 years he was a Territorial officer, and from 1940 to 1945 was on the General Staff, and was in action at Salerno. In the Arnhem airborne operations he was severely wounded and taken prisoner.

A barrister, he served in the Army throughout the war and rose to the rank of major. He was one of the originators of the Design for Freedom movement and its treasurer, and was a member of the Tory Reform Committee from its formation until he became a Whip.
