    Col. J. G. Runciman is a retired Army officer, who was born in 1895 and educated at Kirkwall Burgh School and Glasgow University. He served in the Royal Scots and Royal Tank Regiment, 1915-47. He is secretary to the Essex Growers’ Trading Association. A relative of the late Viscount Runciman, the Liberal statesman, he was first chairman of the Southend East Liberal Association.

    Mr. S. R. Cawley, second son of Lord Cawley, was born in 1915 and educated at Eton and Oxford. He served in the Royal Corps of Signals until 1942, when he was seconded to the Ministry of Supply as a chemical inspector in explosives factories. After the war he investigated captured German documents dealing with secret weapons and rocket appliances and subsequently reopened a family business of bleachers, dyers and printers, of which he is managing director.

He is now a director of an international publishing company and of an international school in Switzerland and a director and founder of the Anglo-Swiss Society of Great Britain. He was for 10 years on Paddington Council.

Housing Committee.

The constituency disappeared under the new distribution. Born on April 1, 1892, he started work as a stevedore at Workington docks and later,was a trade union organizer. He was on the committee responsible for merging 13 unions into the Transport and General Workers Union. He was a borough councillor at 23.

    Mr. A. T. Lennox-Boyd has represented this division since 1931. Born in 1904, he was educated at Sherborne and Christ Church, Oxford, where he was president of 1 the Union. When 33, he became Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour, and in the wartime Government successively held the offices of Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministries of Home Security, of Food, and of Aircraft Production, except for two years in the R.N.V.R. He is an authority on civil aviation and colonial affairs.
