    Mr. A. J. Irvine first contested Kincardine as a Liberal, and in 1943 joined the Labour Party, fighting Twickenham and later South Aberdeen without success. In 1945 he succeeded at Edge Hill. An M.A. of Edinburgh, he also took an Oxford degree and was president of the Union. He is son of the late Mr. J. M. Irvine, K.C.

    Mr. J. Gibbins first contested the West Toxteth division in 1922 and in the course of 13 years fought eight elections. He was M.P. for that division from 1924 until 1931, when he was defeated, but recaptured the seat in 1935. He was born in 1888, served his apprenticeship as a boiler maker, and served in the Navy during the 1914-18 war.

    Miss F. Horsbrugh represented Dundee in Parliament for 14 years and was unseated in 1945. Educated at Lans-downe House, Edinburgh, and St. Hilda’s, Folkestone, she represented Britain on the League of Nations from 1933 to 1936. In 1938 she created Parliamentary history by being the first woman to move the Address in reply to the King’s Speech. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Health in 1939, she occupied that position until the end of the Coalition Government. In the ” caretaker ” Government she was Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food. After her defeat at Midlothian and Peebles in this Election she was adopted for Moss Side.

    Sir Cuthbert Headlam was elected for this division in 1940, and previously sat for Barnard Castle, 1924-29 and 1931-35. He was at various times Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty, to the Minister of Pensions, and to the Minister of Transport. He was born in 1876, and was adopted for North Newcastle at a meeting of the local association, which reversed a decision of the executive council that he should not be nominated because of age. He went to King’s School, Canterbury, and Magdalen College, Oxford, and has been a member of Durham County Council.

    Mr. E. A. A. Shackle-ton, son of the famous explorer, and himself the organizer and surveyor of the Oxford University expedition to Ellesmere Land in 1934-35, entered Parliament in 1946, at a by-election, and became Parliamentary private secretary to the Minister of Supply. Born in 1911 and educated at Radley and Magdalen College, Oxford, he was a wing commander in the R.A.F. intelligence service in the war. He has given special attention to industrial organization in the cotton industry.
