    BIOGRAPHY :

    Mr. W. H. L. Richmonej is the son of the late Admiral Sir Herbert Richmond. He was born in 1918 and was educated at Eton and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was preparing for a Foreign Office career when war broke out in 1939, and he joined the Royal Navy, serving in torpedo-boats, submarines, and destroyers. In 1943 he completed his studies at Cambridge, and then entered journalism.

    Mr. G. O. Sylvester was member for the Normanton division from 1947 to the dissolution. Born in 1898, he started work in the mines when 13, and was a branch secretary of the Yorkshire Mineworkers’ Association nearly 20 years. He has been three times chairman of the Normanton urban council, a position since held by Mrs. Sylvester, and has also served on the West Riding County Council.

Association, Manchester ; he is on the management committee of Oldham Master Cotton Spinners’ Association, and vice-chairman of Oldham Chamber of Commerce.

    Mr. P. Crowder, who was born in 1919, is a son of Capt. J. F. E. Crowder, M.P. for Finchley since 1935. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, and is a barrister of the Inner Temple. Joining the Coldstream Guards in 1939, he served in North Africa, Italy (where he was personal liaison officer to Gen. Leese), and Burma, attaining the rank of major. In 1945 at the North Tottenham by-election he reduced the Labour majority by nearly 10,000.
