  • Nick Thomas-Symonds – 2021 Comments on Financial Cost of Priti Patel’s Bullying

Nick Thomas-Symonds – 2021 Comments on Financial Cost of Priti Patel’s Bullying

The comments made by Nick Thomas-Symonds, the Shadow Home Secretary, on 9 July 2021.

Taxpayers will be appalled at having to pick up the Bill for the Home Secretary’s unacceptable behaviour with £370,000 having been used to settle the case – this money could have been used on extra police officers, or tackling anti-social behaviour.

It was wrong that when Priti Patel broke the Ministerial Code, it was the Prime Minister’s independent adviser who resigned.

As usual with this Government it is one rule for them, another for everyone else.

David Lammy – 2021 Comments on Reduced Juries

The comments made by David Lammy, the Shadow Justice Secretary, on 22 June 2021.

Labour first called for war-time juries of six in most cases until restrictions were lifted back in January.

But instead of taking the bold actions needed to clear the backlog, the government dithered and delayed.

The result is a record-breaking backlog, with tens of thousands of victims being denied justice and countless criminals being let off the hook.

Rupert Matthews – 2021 Statement on Disorder in Oakham

The statement issued by Rupert Matthews, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, on 20 June 2021.

I have received several complaints about the event at Rutland showground, and I am distressed to hear how little regard has been given to the residents of Oakham. There’s been intimidation and dangerous driving, not to mention breaking the covid rules.

I have contacted the Chief Constable demanding an update now and a meeting tomorrow. Of course, I fully support the work that Rutland Police do in the action they are taking and urge residents with concerns to please dial 101.

David Lammy – 2021 Comments on Government’s Rape Review

The comments made by David Lammy, the Shadow Justice Secretary, on 20 June 2021.

After a decade of Conservative incompetence and cuts has led to record-low conviction and prosecution rates for rape, the last thing victims need from the Justice Secretary is a U-turn.

The Conservatives must urgently clarify whether or not they intend to stick to the target of increasing the number of rapists who are charged and end up in court.

Priti Patel – 2021 Comments on Anniversary of Reading Attacks

The comments made by Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, on 20 June 2021.

A year on from the cowardly attack in Reading’s Forbury Gardens, my thoughts and prayers on this very difficult day are with the families and loved ones of Joe Ritchie-Bennett, James Furlong and David Wails, those that were injured and affected & the truly brave police officers.

  • Alistair Carmichael – 2021 Article on Priti Patel and Refugees

Alistair Carmichael – 2021 Article on Priti Patel and Refugees

The article by Alistair Carmichael, the Liberal Democrat MP for Orkney and Shetland, published on 15 June 2021.

Priti Patel says refugees should come to the UK through safe and legal routes, and is threatening to punish any who don’t.

But at the same time, the Conservative Government is failing to provide any safe and legal routes for refugees to take.

The Government’s latest figures show that just 353 refugees were resettled in the UK in 2020-21 – a drop of 93% since the previous year.

The UK has a proud history of providing sanctuary to those in need, but now the Conservatives are turning their backs on refugees.

Their failure to provide safe and legal routes is pushing desperate, vulnerable people into the hands of people smugglers and human traffickers.

Priti Patel’s tough rhetoric and cruel policies only increases their profit margins. “We thank your government for our full pockets,” one smuggler told the Guardian recently.

That’s why the Liberal Democrats are calling on the Government to make an ambitious, ten-year commitment to resettle 10,000 vulnerable refugees a year from Syria and other dangerous conflict areas. Because that’s how we will actually combat these criminal gangs and prevent people from making dangerous attempts to cross the Channel and the Mediterranean.

And what about the people who do come to the UK seeking sanctuary, having left their homes fleeing war or prosecution? They should be welcomed with compassion, not kept in limbo for months while their claims are processed.

Those same statistics reveal that 50,084 asylum seekers have been waiting more than six months for a decision from the Home Office – a number that has doubled on Priti Patel’s watch. That’s the scandal she should be tackling, but none of her endless series of cruel proposals will actually help solve it. In fact, they’ll just cause even longer delays.

The Home Office is clearly not fit for purpose. So instead of making it harder for refugees to claim asylum, let’s take these decisions away from the Home Office altogether.

A new arms-length, non-political agency should take over, with the staff, training and resources to process applications quickly, decide cases fairly, and get them right first time. And let’s finally lift the ban and give asylum seekers the right to work. They should be enabled to contribute to our society, not trapped for months on just £5.66 a day.

Liberal Democrats are fighting to fix the broken asylum system, so that everyone can have confidence in it, and everyone’s rights and dignity are respected.

  • Nick Thomas-Symonds – 2021 Comments on the Manchester Arena Inquiry Report

Nick Thomas-Symonds – 2021 Comments on the Manchester Arena Inquiry Report

The comments made by Nick Thomas-Symonds, the Shadow Home Secretary, on 17 June 2021.

Today we have in our thoughts the 22 children and adults who were murdered and the hundreds injured in the Manchester Arena attack. We will always remember them, and their families who live with the pain of loss every single day. We thank all those people who responded so bravely on the night and who have done so much to help ever since.

Learning the lessons from this horrific act, doing everything we possibly can to try and ensure it can never happen again, is a duty we owe to those who have been lost.

The report is correct that the ultimate responsibility for the events of 22 May 2017 lies with the vile perpetrators. However, we must look closely at the findings and what must change. It is heartbreaking to read in the report that ‘there were a number of missed opportunities to alter the course of what happened that night. More should have been done.’

Every necessary step must now be taken to embed these tragic lessons into the practice of everyday security. We will look closely at the recommendations and see how Labour can best play a role in helping to secure the changes necessary.

  • Ellie Reeves – 2021 Comments on the Government’s Rape Review

Ellie Reeves – 2021 Comments on the Government’s Rape Review

The comments made by Ellie Reeves, the Shadow Solicitor General, on 17 June 2021.

After waiting over two years for this to be published by the Government, the review and its recommendations do not go far enough.

Rape prosecutions are at a record low, only one in 60 rapes are leading to a charge and this review was meant to understand the failings of the criminal justice system, and set out the Government’s plan to reverse the worrying deterioration of rape charges, prosecutions and conviction levels. The Government have failed to do that, and it has failed victims of rape on every front by pushing the justice system to the brink of collapse through a decade of cuts to police, courts and the CPS.

This review was a real opportunity to improve the criminal justice system for victims of rape, and it has missed that opportunity. The Government should urgently introduce Labour’s root and branch reforms to support rape victims, instead of piecemeal pilots and tinkering that will not do enough to fix the Government’s failure to support rape victims.

  • Nick Thomas-Symonds – 2021 Comments on the Daniel Morgan Report

Nick Thomas-Symonds – 2021 Comments on the Daniel Morgan Report

The comments made by Nick Thomas-Symonds, the Shadow Home Secretary, on 15 June 2021.

The findings in this report are damning and go to the very heart of our policing, criminal justice system and media. My thoughts are with the Morgan family who have been denied justice for over three decades.

The Panel’s finding of a “form of institutional corruption” is incredibly serious. The Metropolitan Police must now account for what has happened and act on the report.

Ministers must set out a detailed timeline for when the report’s recommendations will be implemented. The time for a ‘duty of candour’ is long overdue, and it is for the Government to provide reassurance to the Morgan family and the wider public that something like this can never happen again.

David Lammy – 2021 Comments on Whole Life Orders

The comments made by David Lammy, the Shadow Justice Secretary, on 10 June 2021.

The protection of women and girls from violence is one of the first duties of any government.

But the Conservatives are failing to take the actions necessary to protect them.

The Conservatives should urgently introduce whole life orders for any offender found guilty of the rape, abduction and murder of a stranger, as well as Labour’s broader package of measures to keep women and girls safe.
