He is interested in farming and in raising pedigree Highland cattle. He has been a member for Argyll since 1940.

In 1940 he won Renfrewshire at a by-election, and held the seat in 1945. He served in the 1914-18 war, and was awarded the D.S.O. He was also in the Army in the last war until his election to Parliament.

She was first returned as M.P. for Battersea South in 1945, when her majority was 7,225.
