He served in the Army from 1939 to 1945, and was promoted to captain. He won the King’s Norton division from the Conservatives in 1945 with a 12,298 majority. He is a member of the Parliamentary Labour I’arty group on external affairs. In his Publications he has given a great deal of attention to the problems and rights of soldiers.

He gained an honours degree in engineering at Cambridge and in 1932 he started as an oil combustion engineer, founding a company of which he is now chairman. He is vice-president of the National Peace Council.
