Aged 45, and educated at St. Edmund’s College and the University of Liverpool, she was for some years a voluntary social worker in the slums of Liverpool.

He is also chairman of companies of trawler managers and wholesale fish merchants. He was educated at the Grammar School, Grimsby, and has served on Grimsby Town Council since 1945.

After the second world war, in which he was an Army instmctor, he was a senior history master at Bedford School for two years before returning to Cambridge to join the extra-mural board.

He is part author of books on national insurance, mining legislation, and world currency.
