During the war he served with the R.A.O.C. in Sicily and North Africa.

Partner in a law firm until 1936, he became solicitor to the Durham Mineworkers’ Union and is now solicitor to the National Union of Mineworkers. He was a member of the commission which inquired into the Nigerian disorders in 1949.

An amateur boxer, he has reached the London University finals and has boxed for both his university and the united hospitals. He is a qualified referee, and a founder member of Wolverhampton Amateur Boxing Club. From 1941 to 1948 he served in the R.A.M.C. with the 14th Army.

He has visited Austria and Norway with Parliamentary delegations, and made extensive tours in Europe as a member of the Imperial War Graves Commission.
