Mr. R. W. Williams was returned at a by-election in 1948. He is 42, the son of a South Wales miner, and qualified as a solicitor. Partner in a law firm until 1936, he became solicitor to the Durham Mineworkers’ Union and is now solicitor to the National Union of Mineworkers. He was a member of the commission which inquired into the Nigerian disorders in 1949.

Dr. A. Brown was born in Leeds, educated in London (where he qualified in medicine) and went to Wolverhampton in 1935. He is a member of a family of doctors. An amateur boxer, he has reached the London University finals and has boxed for both his university and the united hospitals. He is a qualified referee, and a founder member of Wolverhampton Amateur Boxing Club. From 1941 to 1948 he served in the R.A.M.C. with the 14th Army.

Since 1936 he has assisted in poor man’s lawyer centres at Barking and Westminster, and is hon. solicitor to the Jewish Refugees Committee. He is a specialist on the law relating to aliens.

A subaltern in the Territorial Army when war broke out, he was commanding an infantry battalion in 1945 and, since 1947, has commanded the 9th Bn., The Manchester Regt. As a member of the council of the Wholesale Textile Association, he toured the United States and Canada in 1946 with an official delegation.

Born in 1897 he was formerly a checkweighman at Shipley Colliery, near Ilkes-ton, and has been a vice-president of the Derbyshire miners, secretary of the Miners’ Parliamentary Group and on the executive of the National Union of Minewqrkers. He has visited Austria and Norway with Parliamentary delegations, and made extensive tours in Europe as a member of the Imperial War Graves Commission.
