Mr. C. W. Gibson won the Kennington seat in 1945, but it disappeared in the redistribution. Born in 1889, he studied at Morley College, Rus-kin College and the London School of Economics, and was an official of the Transport and General Workers Union until elected to Parliament. For four years he was a member of the Central Housing Advisory Committee. Since 1943 he has been chairman of the London County Council Housing Committee.

Mr. H. Berry, formerly a consulting engineer, who won the seat in 1945 for Labour, was born in Woolwich in 1888 and was educated at Polytechnic schools and Goldsmiths’ Institute. He has an extensive record of public service ; a former mayor of Woolwich, he has been on the council since 1922. He was president of the National Union of Allotment Holders in 1921-22. Among other activities he is governor of Woolwich Polytechnic and member of the Metropolitan Water Board and Thames Conservancy.

He is secretary of the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers, and chairman of the Health Committee of the Essex County Council.

Mr. P. Buchan-Hepburn, who represented the East Toxteth division of Liverpool from 1931, was Conservative Chief Whip in the late Parliament. In 1939 he was appointed an Assistant Government Whip and soon afterwards a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury. During the war he joined the 11th City of London Yeomanry and became a brigade major. Born in 1901, he was educated at Harrow and Cambridge.

A company sergeant-major in the 1914-18 war, he served for a time in the Pioneer Corps in the last war, but returned to civil life and entered war industry. He is?a champion of the small trader.

Mr. J. Parker is the organizer of the Brentford and Chiswick Communist Party. He is 33, unmarried, and a sheet metal worker. Early in the war, he was working in aircraft production, but was later called up and served in the R.A.F. He joined the Communist Party in 1940.
