He is on the executive committee of the National Union of Teachers, and during the war was a captain in the Royal Artillery.

He became a member of Lambeth Borough Council in 1945, and of the L.C.C. in 1946, and has been chairman of the Public Control Committee of the L.C.C. for two years. He served during the war, and was afterwards appointed adjutant of the 2nd Cadet Bn., the Royal Fusiliers.

Nicolson, who was born in 1917, is a son of Mr. Harold Nicolson, who for 10 years represented the former West Leicester division at Westminster as National Labour member and was the unsuccessful Labour candidate at the North Croydon by-election in 1948. Mr. N. Nicolson was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford. He served in the Grenadier Guards during the war. He is a director of a publishing company.

An M.A. of Edinburgh, he also took an Oxford degree and was president of the Union. He is son of the late Mr. J. M. Irvine, K.C.

Mr. J. Gibbins first contested the West Toxteth division in 1922 and in the course of 13 years fought eight elections. He was M.P. for that division from 1924 until 1931, when he was defeated, but recaptured the seat in 1935. He was born in 1888, served his apprenticeship as a boiler maker, and served in the Navy during the 1914-18 war.

BIOGRAPHY :

Miss F. Horsbrugh represented Dundee in Parliament for 14 years and was unseated in 1945. Educated at Lans-downe House, Edinburgh, and St. Hilda’s, Folkestone, she represented Britain on the League of Nations from 1933 to 1936. In 1938 she created Parliamentary history by being the first woman to move the Address in reply to the King’s Speech. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Health in 1939, she occupied that position until the end of the Coalition Government. In the ” caretaker ” Government she was Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food. After her defeat at Midlothian and Peebles in this Election she was adopted for Moss Side.

Sir Robert Cary was member for Eccles, 1935-45, and served several ministers as Parliamentary private secretary. In the ” caretaker ” Government he was a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury. After unsuccessfully contesting a by-election at Ashton-under-Lyne, he worked in the Conservative Central Office. Born in 1898, he was educated at Ardingly and Sandhurst, and served in the Army, 1916-23, and again in the last war.
