    BIOGRAPHY :

    Sir Peter Bennett, the head of one of the largest Birmingham manufacturing concerns, succeeded Mr. Neville Chamberlain as M.P. for the division in 1940. He is 70. He represented the British motor industry at the Imperial Conference at Ottawa in 1932; and in 1938 became a member of the panel of industrial advisers to the Prime Minister. During the war he was, first, Director-General of Tanks and Transport, Ministry of Supply, and, later, Director of the Emergency Services Organization, Ministry of Aircraft Production, and Chairman of the Automatic Gun Board.

Secretary of the local Labour Party and the Halesowen Trades Council for some years, he was three times a Labour municipal candidate before joining the Communist Party. A district committee member of the Amalgamated Engineering Union, he has served on many trade union committees.

Leaving the sea he became a teacher and entered the service of the Brighton Education Committee. During the war he served on the Northern Patrol, in Norway and at Cherbourg. He was at Singapore, where he made a last-minute escape in a dinghy. In East Africa later he was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander.
