    BIOGRAPHY :

    Mr. E. Thurtle, who sat in Parliament as member for Shoreditch from 1923 to 1931 and since 1935, is a son-in-law of the late Mr. George Lansbury, at one time leader of the Labour Opposition. He was born in New York State in 1884 and became an accountant and salesman. In the first world war he was severely wounded at Cambrai and afterwards became an active champion of ex-service men. He has been a Labour Whip and was Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Information from 1941 to 1945. For some years he has been journalist and author.

    Mr. H. R. Adams, aged 38, attended the London School of Economics and took a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He has been an advertising and sales executive, and Assistant Commissioner for National Savings. In 1945 he won the Balham and?Tooting division, which disappeared in the redistribution. He was appointed an assistant Government whip in i?47, and a Lord Commissioner of the ireasury in 1949. He served as a tank officer in North Africa and Italy during the fa,r. and later as staff officer, Land Forces, Adriatic.

Served with the 7th Battalion Duke of Wellington’s Regiment in 1914-18 and was in command of it at the outbreak of the last war.

    Mr. F. M. Bennett, aged 31, who contested Burslem as a Liberal National in 1945, is a barrister practising on the Midland Circuit. He served in the war with The Middlesex Yeomanry, and in 1940 was commissioned in the Royal Artillery. Later he became a military experimental officer in the Petroleum Warfare Department and was promoted to lieutenant-colonel. He has travelled widely and is interested in foreign affairs. In the campaign against the Greek rebels he served as an observer for the Greek Government.

In 1927, and again in 1934, he was in Russia, on the latter occasion for two years.

Later he was Military Assistant to Mr. Harold Macmillan when Resident Minister in North Africa. Since the war he has studied farming and estate management.
