    Mr. A. Herbert is a son of the late Col. Aubrey Herbert, who was for 12 years member for Yeovil, and a grandson of the Earl of Caernarvon who was Secretary for the Colonies and a Viceroy of Ireland under Disraeli. Educated at Balliol College, Oxford, he was three times medically rejected for the British Army, but volunteered for the 1st Polish Armoured Division and served with them for five years in the ranks.

He served during the last war with the R.A.F. and was elected to Parliament for Pontypool at a by-election in 1946.

He came to England as liaison officer on the staff of the C.-in-C, Portsmouth, and on demobilization decided to settle in Scotland.
