He served in India and Egypt. He was G.S.O.I. from 1940-42, B.G.S., H.Q., R.A.C. in 1942, and finally commanded an armoured brigade. Born 44 years ago he farms at Barham, where he lives.

    Mr. George Tomlinson, born in 1890, has represented Farnworth since 1938, when he won the seat in a by-election. He left the weaving sheds after 12 yea?s and started business as a botanical brewer. During many years’ service on local authorities he devoted himself to education, and after entering Parliament and holding the posts of Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Works he succeeded the late Miss Ellen Wilkinson as Minister of Education in 1947.

    Mr. J. E. MacColl is a barrister born in 1908 and educated at Sedbergh and Balliol College. Oxford. He took a fellowship in Economics at Chicago University, and, returning to England was called to the Bar, practising on the North-Eastern Circuit until 1939. He served in the civil defence organization in London during the war. He was elected to Paddington Borough Council in 1934, was mayor in 1947-49, and for 10 years served on the L.C.C. education committee. He is a member of the Hemel Hempstead New Town Development Corporation, and has broadcast on local government and town planning.
