    Sir John Mayhew represented the constituency from 1931 to 1945, when he was Qeteated. An agriculturist and industrialist, ne has family associations with Essex which go oack some centuries. In the 1914-18 war he served in France and was wounded. He was an army welfare officer from 1939 to 1949. A lreeman of the City of London, he has been a Provincial area chairman of the Conservative Party.

    Mr. Ian MacLeod is head of the Home Affairs Department of the Conservative Central Office. An honours B.A. of Cambridge, he was reading for the Bar when the war broke out, and he volunteered as a private. He was commissioned in May, 1940, and was wounded in the Battle °f France. Later he was promoted major, and joined Field-Marshal Planning staff for the Normandy campaigh. He was appointed D.A.Q.M.G. to the 50th Division, and landed with them on D Day.

Engaged professionally in building society work, he has been for many years a Sunday-school superintendent, and is also hon. secretary of the Gateshead Liberal Association. He has been a member of the Gateshead Borough Council since 1939.

In 1938 he was a trade union delegate to Russia as a guest of the U.S.S.R. Government. He served with the Navy in the 1914-18 war.
