To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what assessment she has made of the efficacy of grammar stream programmes in comprehensive schools.

The Government is committed to enabling all children to fulfil their potential by delivering a school system that works for everyone.
The Department has not commissioned any recent research to look at the specific benefits or effects of streaming by ability in comprehensive schools. However, we do know that the vast majority of schools choose to stream by ability over the core subjects.
There are indications that this approach benefits higher-ability pupils. For example, the Educational Endowment Foundation (EEF) evidence review[1] found that on average studies showed that higher attaining pupils make one to two additional months’ progress when set or streamed compared to when taught in mixed ability groups. The EEF found that high attaining pupils benefit from different kinds of grouping, including pull-out classes, accelerated classes and moving up a year.

It is for individual businesses to determine how they meet the skills challenges arising from the Government’s ambitious home building programme.
Our reforms to apprenticeships will be a key tool to enable employers to meet their skills needs and the construction sector is currently developing a range of apprenticeship standards as part of the reform process.

In the interests of transparency, from January 2015, the Department began to publish all appropriately redacted successful free school applications on GOV.UK. Due to an on-going police investigation into alleged fraud at Kings Science Academy, its free school application was not published at that time. The legal proceedings now have concluded and we will publish the appropriately redacted original application in due course.

The training that is delivered for apprentices is monitored by Ofsted and the Skills Funding Agency, which set minimum standards for achievement rates. Both organisations have intervention regimes in place if training falls short of minimum requirements.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what assessment she has made of the effect of the changes to the Early Years Educator apprenticeship standard introduced in August 2014.

The Early Years Educator apprenticeship standard at Level 3 remains in development and so has not yet been published for use by the sector. Therefore, it is not possible to make any assessment of its effect at this point.
The Department continues to work closely with the Early Years Trailblazer to develop apprenticeship standards for key roles in the sector.
