Aberavon Consituency
Aberavon is a safe Labour constituency in South Wales.
Hywel Francis followed John Morris, who represented this seat for 42 years from 1959, as Labour MP at the 2001 General Election. Morris had been the Welsh Secretary from 1974 to 1979. The constituency was also once held by former Prime Minister, Ramsey MacDonald from 1922 until 1929. William Cove was the Member of Parliament from 1929 until 1959, meaning just 4 men have held this seat since 1922.
The Welsh Assembly Member for this constituency is Brian Gibbons.

Hywel Francis is to stand again as the Labour candidate.
The seat is likely to remain a safe Labour seat. The Liberal Democrats overtook Plaid Cymru as the second party in this constituency in 2001, with the Conservatives behind in fourth place. Labour have held this seat since its creation.

Hywel Francis was born in 1946 and was special adviser to the Secretary of State for Wales, Paul Muprhy from 1999 to 2000, and he won this constituency the year after.
